Signs Your Toddler is Ready for Swim Lessons
While swim exposure can start early, formal lessons are most effective when your toddler shows certain signs of readiness.
Physical Readiness
Head Control
Your toddler should have strong head and neck control—typically by 12-18 months.
Basic Coordination
Can they follow simple movement instructions? "Kick your legs" or "reach your arms"?
Stamina
Able to participate in activities for 15-20 minutes without becoming overly tired.
Emotional Readiness
Comfortable with Strangers
While some shyness is normal, they should be able to warm up to new people with your support.
Following Simple Directions
Can they understand and attempt to follow basic instructions?
Interest in Water
Shows curiosity about water during bath time or at the pool.
Not Ready Yet?
If your toddler isn't showing these signs, water play and exposure at home can help prepare them:
- Bath time games
- Splash pad visits
- Shallow wading pool play
The Right Age
